Cycling Etiquette

As a cyclist, I love watching all the riders pass by my house. As a driver, I understand the complaints against cyclists in Bayside. I wish I had a giant “I’m a cyclist” sticker on my car for the times when I have to honk so riders 3- and 4-abreast become aware that a vehicle is trying to pass. With that sticker, they would know that I am not a rude, impatient, bike-hating driver hell-bent on running them off the road but an understanding cyclist who unfortunately has to spend time in a car, hopes for the safety of all cyclists, and knows that the actions of each cyclist impact how we are understood as a group.
From the Bayside Village newsletter:
“With warm weather on the horizon, the Village would like to encourage bicyclists to remain considerate and courteous when riding on Village streets. Please do not ride in packs, as it poses a safety hazard to both bicyclists and passing vehicles. Also, be mindful of your noise level when riding on Village streets, your neighbors will appreciate it!”
In case you don’t know (and believe me people don’t), when you’re yelling to be heard by your riding partner, houses for blocks around learn the intimate details of your conversation.
